What is it?
Honest, refreshingly so, which might mean it’s not as a high a star-rating car as others, but then for the majority of buyers that won’t matter one bit. The Rapid is a fine car, that’s surprisingly based on Volkswagen’s Polo platform. Surprising, because the Rapid is spacious - much more so than the Polo. You’ll pay no more than €190 in road tax in any Rapid, and the maximum you’ll pay for one is under €25,300 for a 1.4 TDI 90hp with the DSG automatic gearbox.
What is it like?
The exterior styling follows that of the current Skoda line-up; that’s to say it’s neat, if fairly undramatic. That’s true of the interior too, which isn’t going to win any prizes for flair, but everything’s sensibly placed and it's huge in the back and the boot. The engines include a 1.2 TSI petrol in 90- or 110hp guises and a 1.4- or 1.6-litre TDI with 90hp and 116hp respectively. The larger diesel’s a bit noisy and refinement is not as good as it could be, but there’s a reason for that, and it’s the price.

It’s difficult to be overly critical of what Skoda offers with the Rapid, which is basically good, inexpensive and spacious transport. That’s its appeal. No, it’s not as quiet nor as polished to drive as many cars you can buy, but then neither do they offer the sort of space-to-cost ratio. The standard equipment list is fairly basic too, but there’s the option to add in the kit you want rather than pay for it and not use it. As we said, honest.
