Renault Clio hatchback (2015)
Our Rating 4 / 5
Stylish, spacious French supermini
What is it?
A perfect example of a modern supermini. The five-door only Renault Clio ’s dimensions are enough to place it in the size category above not so long ago, making for a spacious cabin and plenty of luggage space. It’s a good looker too, Renault ’s styling team always penning a fine-looking supermini, helping it stand out out from its Fiesta, Polo and Yaris rivals. It’s safe too, with a five-star EuroNCAP rating. The range of small, efficient, engines also helps keep tax payments and fuel costs to a minimum.
What is it like?
The Renault Clio has always been among the more enjoyable to drive superminis out there, and so it continues with the current model. It’s not only fun though, it’s practical too, with loads of space and plentiful standard equipment. The engines are smooth and economical, which keeps running costs sensible, but the key appeal is the roundedness of its performance, mated, of course, to its fine looks. The diesels are the most economical, but don’t rule out the small petrol engines unless you plan on doing huge distances.
Carzone verdict: 4/5
A big contender in the supermini sphere, it's among the most spacious cars in its class. Fellow French contender Peugeot’s 208 drives with a bit more verve for a little less money, but it cannot match the Renault for space. There’s loads of choice, too, Renault always having an expansive range of trim levels, so pick carefully if you’ve decided the Clio ’s for you. The 0.9-litre petrol will suit most, but the diesel’s exceptional emissions and fuel consumption figures are difficult to ignore.
