Toyota recalls 1.6 million vehicles

Toyota is to recall over 1.6 million vehicles worldwide, including hundreds in Ireland, over safety concerns.

1.2 million vehicles are being recalled in Japan and 400,000 in the rest of the world.

Over 140,000 Avensis models are being recalled, bringing the total number or Toyota-recalled vehicles since late 2009, to over 15 million.

Toyota Ireland is to recall 253 Avensis cars, produced between July 2000 and September 2008, to replace fuel pipes and inspect fuel pump check valves.

Lexus Ireland is to recall 186 Lexus IS250 petrol vehicles, made between July 2000 and September 2008, to check the torque on fuel pressure sensors.

Toyota Ireland Managing Director David Shannon said there had have been no reports in Ireland involving these issues and described the measure as "precautionary."

Toyota is recalling nearly 19,000 cars in the UK and 140,000 Avensis models worldwide .

1.2 million Noah minivans and other models in Japan are being recalled.

Toyota told Japan's Transport Ministry that no accidents had been reported related to the defects.

Toyota spokeswoman Shiori Hashimoto said the company does not disclose estimates for recall costs.

The latest recalls bring the total number of Toyota-made vehicles recalled since late 2009 to more than 15 million, most of which have been in the United States.

Toyota was the only major automaker to see its sales fall in the United States, its largest market, last year.

Despite this it was the world's largest car maker in 2010.
