The new Spyker Aileron Spyder seems to be having a difficult birth. Despite announcements last year that the new car will be built in a new facility in Coventry, nothing has yet rolled off the production line.

But news coming out of the Netherlands could explain why the world is having to wait for the new Dutch supercar: the planned Audi V8 is being dropped for the motor from a Corvette ZR1.

Spyker CEO Victor Muller told a Dutch magazine that "the Aileron Spyder will not be equipped with a 4.2 V8 engine sourced from Audi, but with a supercharged V8 from the States. The General Motors power plant is also used in the Corvette ZR1."

This means 638bhp and 604lb ft rather than 400bhp and 354lb ft of torque, which we definitely approve of...
