Mean Mower goes at world-record pace

Honda-created mad machine flies up and down Spanish test track for place in Guinness Book of Records.

It'd take some fairly big conkers to do it, but should you feel like mowing your lawn at breakneck speed, you might want to try and purchase Honda's Mean Mower.

The crazy creation is a HF2620 lawn tractor with a 1,000cc engine from a Honda VTR Firestorm motorbike stuffed into its tiny 140kg frame. It was created by race car-prep outfit Team Dynamics in the UK with the specific aim of seizing the Guinness World Record for Fastest Lawnmower.

And, channelling its 109hp through the modified running gear of an all-terrain vehicle, with a poor journalist from BBC's Top Gear magazine crouched atop it, the Mean Mower blasted the old record into smithereens - averaging an official 116.57mph (187.6km/h) over two runs at the IDIADA Probing Ground in north-east Spain, almost 50km/h quicker than the previous holder.

To prove it's still a lawnmower, after the record-breaking run it had to cut a strip of grass at the side of the tarmac. Although it is only said to be capable of cultivating lawns at speeds of up to 24km/h... So perhaps it's not so quick for mowing after all.
