Holy Daewoo Batman

Granddad builds Batmobile from MoT failure...

At some point in time every child has pictured themselves as a superhero of some sort. While most of us were happy with the costume (and maybe even the utility belt that housed a primitive walkie-talkie) one lucky six-year-old has the iconic car to go with his superhero costume.

When Alan Bennett's trusty Daewoo Matiz failed its MoT (this story comes from the UK) he decided to turn it into a replica Batmobile for his Batman-mad grandson Alfie.  Modelled on the iconic Lincoln Futura from the sixties TV show, the 'BatMatiz' features the iconic bubble windscreen, rocket exhaust, rear fins and even a 'Bat 1' licence plate.

Inside, the Batman logo adorns the steering wheel and dashboard, a red Batphone has been installed and it even has a rear view camera for reversing into the Batcave. The Batmobile is currently not roadworthy but Mr Bennett reckons it only needs minimal work to pass the MoT - no hurry either as it will be another 11 years before Alfie can drive it.

And the cost for the BatMatiz? A snip at £5,000 (about €6,000), especially when you consider that the original George Barris designed car recently sold at auction for nearly €3.5 million.
