Citroen C5 X preview

Here's the Carzone.ie preview to the 2022 Citroen C5 X.

What's this?
The new Citroen C5 X, due to land in early 2022. It’s the largest vehicle made under the Citroen banner at present and it aims to tempt in SUV-hungry customers who might not necessarily need the full-sized thing.

What will its rivals be?
Any mid-sized SUV, from either a premium or a mainstream brand, but also off-roading lifestyle estates like the Audi A6 allroad quattro could be considered alternatives to the Citroen C5 X. It’s also a slightly higher-riding option to the Peugeot 508 SW, with which it will share mechanicals and a platform, albeit the Peugeot is a ‘normal’ estate.

Any tech info?
It appears as if there won’t be any diesel versions of the Citroen C5 X, the French company only offering petrol and plug-in hybrid petrol drivetrains at first. The only confirmed model is the plug-in hybrid, which delivers 225hp and an electric driving range of around 50km on a single charge. This is a similar system as used in the Peugeot 508 and other Citroen plug-in models, so expect a 1.6-litre petrol engine to be doing the heavy lifting in terms of the combustion engine.

Inside, a new type of infotainment system will be presented on a 12-inch touchscreen, which is a huge display by industry standards, and much will be made of premium materials like wood in the interior finishing. Back on the outside of the Citroen, 19-inch wheels will be fitted but they will be narrow to aid fuel economy across the board.

What will the range be like?
As stated, we don’t believe there will be any diesel models and the Citroen C5 X should come in a line-up of a plushily appointed versions, mainly because it will operate as the marque’s flagship – it’s a much bigger vehicle than the company’s current largest product, the C5 Aircross SUV.

Expectations?
They’re reasonably high, as Citroen is making some nice-looking cars right now and it has certainly rediscovered its mojo when it comes to ride comfort and refinement, too. The risk here is that the company has identified that people love SUVs, but it has refused to make a larger model than the C5 Aircross its flagship, instead pinning its hopes on a higher-riding estate car. Whether that tactic will be a success here in Ireland, where we tend to shun an estate (and there’s no saloon option for the C5 X, either), remains to be seen.
