Toyota recalls 19,000 extra cars

Toyota has confirmed that it will be recalling 19,000 extra cars in Ireland for a potential airbag fault.

What's new?
Toyota Ireland has announced a recall of over 19,000 cars to fix a faulty airbag problem. The models involved are Yaris, Corolla and Avensis, manufactured between November 2000 and March 2004. The recall follows on from another in 2013 and further investigations with the component suppliers lead Toyota to understand that some cars believed to be unaffected by that recall actually required replacement parts.

The problem relates to a flexible flat cable that connects the airbag control unit to the airbag module, which may have become damaged when the steering wheel is turned. If this happens, the airbag warning light will come on and the driver's airbag may become de-activated.

Also, in a statement submitted to Japan's transport ministry, the carmaker said that "There is a risk that the airbag container could break down and scatter around, which could cause fire or injuries." Further details on any potential fire hazard are not forthcoming but a company spokesman in Tokyo said Toyota had received a complaint from a Japanese customer who said his passenger seat was burned due to the glitch.

And finally...

Toyota is keen to point out that "there have been no reports of any accidents of serious injuries related to these issues." Globally more than 2,250,000 cars are being recalled and the company says all the owners affected have been notified.
