Paris Motor Show 2012: the preview

In just over a month the doors to the 2012 Paris Motor Show will open to the media. Here's some of what will be in store.

On September 27 the Paris Motor Show opens to the media. Here's a glimpse at the new models likely to make their debut. Believe us when we say that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Small cars

Audi hasn't said as much yet, but we're expecting to see a production-ready A2 hatchback in Paris, along with a new front-wheel drive BMW 1 Series to compete against it. Renault will be hoping to dominate the headlines with its sporty looking new Clio - and no doubt it has a surprise or two up its sleeves as well. One of the most interesting new models at the show, regardless of its diminutive dimensions, will be Opel's new Adam.

Sensible cars

Paris will host the debut of the five-door Audi A3, otherwise known as the Sportback. Kia is set to launch a far more stylish Carens compact MPV, while Mazda gives its promising looking '6' saloon its first outing. SEAT will be rather busy, as it has the cool Leon and the Toledo to shout about, though Volkswagen's all-new Golf might take a large share of the limelight. That's the car Toyota is targeting with a fresh-faced Auris hatchback, to be on display in regular and Hybrid flavours. Not to be outdone, Opel will bring along a facelifted Astra. There's a chance that Ford's new Mondeo will debut too.

SUVs

A little educated guesswork points to the probability of an Audi Q2 concept being unveiled in Paris. Confirmed for launch are the Chevrolet Trax, Honda CR-V and Opel Mokka. We suspect that the Fiat 500X will be on show, as will the MINI Paceman - though is this odd coupé an SUV? Porsche should bring along its high-performance Macan, while Mitsubishi wheels out a plug-in hybrid variant of its new Outlander. King of them all though is the 2013 Range Rover. That is unless Lamborghini rocks up with a production ready version of its Urus concept of course...

Sporty cars

No motor show is complete without its share of fantasy supercars and almost affordable sports cars. Paris is no different. Audi launches its 2013 R8 there, along with the all-electric e-tron version, and BMW may bring along its own 'green' supercar, the hybrid i8. One of the stars of the show is likely to be Jaguar's F-Type roadster. Can it emulate its great predecessor, the E-Type?

Luxury cars

Lexus will launch the updated LS saloon in Paris, though its own coupé-cabriolet concept may overshadow it somewhat. Mercedes-Benz is expected to have several new cars, though the only one we have any details of as yet is the gorgeous CLS Shooting Brake. Meanwhile Porsche is rumoured to have a similar estate-like version of the Panamera in the works.
