Ireland's Best Selling 191 Cars Revealed

We reveal the most sold cars in Ireland during the 191 period and discuss some interesting talking points

According to data published by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), car registrations are down 7% compared to the first six months of last year. Although total registrations are down from last year, we saw an increase in registrations in April which was the first increase since August 2018. This good news continues as we have also seen an increase in May and June, which puts the Irish Motor Industry in a positive place going into to the 192-registration period.

Unsurprisingly there has been no change in the top two for the first half of 2019, with the Nissan Qashqai again sitting at the top as Ireland’s best-selling car overall, closely followed by the Hyundai Tucson.

The big change though is in the third spot which saw the all-new Toyota Corolla record a 99% increase in sales from last year selling 2,623 units for 191.

Another model worth mentioning here is the popular Hyundai Kona which recorded a 55% increase in sales with over 2,000 units sold and sits in the top ten best selling cars for the first time.New Nissan Qashqai 191

What’s interesting to see is that five of the top ten best selling cars in Ireland are SUV’s which really expresses the growing popularity for these types of vehicles in Ireland that now account for over 40% of all passenger vehicles sold.

Sales of electric vehicles in Ireland have continued to rise as more and more models are released to the Irish market. For the first six months of 2019, there were 1,954 electric vehicles sold in Ireland which is a 269.38% increase compared to the same period last year where there were just 529 electric cars registered.

The extremely popular Nissan Leaf continues to significantly grow sales with a 147.53% increase on last year with a whopping 651 units sold. But this year saw a new player enter the game and to say it hit the ground running would be an understatement. When Hyundai announced the first-ever all-electric SUV we knew it was going to be a popular car for Irish drivers but did we know it was going to end up being Ireland's best-selling electric vehicle? The all-new Hyundai Kona Electric sold an impressive 728 units during the 191 period and accounts for 37% of all-electric vehicles sold in Ireland.

Other new entrants to the electric car market included the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi E-Tron, Kia Niro and Kia Soul. I’m sure we will all agree that its an exciting year for electric vehicles in Ireland and with more and more new models being released to the market it will be interesting to see what the future holds.
