BMW i8 Roadster 2018 preview

Here's the Carzone.ie preview to the 2018 BMW i8 Roadster.

What's this?

The new i8 Roadster is an open-topped version of BMW’s i8 hybrid sports car. The i8 coupe has been on sale since 2014 and this year that car receives a modest update to keep it fresh, at the same time as the introduction of this Roadster version. It retains highly distinctive ‘gullwing’ doors, but loses its back seats. Not that they are very usable in the coupe… The i8 Roadster uses the same hybrid powertrain, though is a fraction slower and less efficient due to its higher weight. The fabric roof takes 15 seconds to go up or down, and that can be done at speeds of up to 50km/h.

What will its rivals be?

We’re struggling to think of any direct competitor, i.e. a hybrid sports car in which you can drop the roof, but at a likely starting price north of €150,000 there are several dramatic open-topped sports cars on the market. The Jaguar F-Type Roadster, Porsche 911 Cabriolet and Mercedes-Benz SL are all in contention, though they all cost considerably more to run due to their petrol-only powertrains.

Any tech info?

As part of the model year update, all BMW i8s get an upgraded hybrid system. As before, there’s a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine mounted in the middle producing 231hp, but the electric motor up front has been upgraded. Total system maximum power output has risen from 362hp to 374hp, but more importantly, the electric-only range has increased. In the i8 Roadster, it stands at over 50 kilometres, while speeds of up to 120km/h are possible in the eDrive mode.

What will the range be like?

The BMW i8 will be offered simply as a Coupe or a Roadster, but there will be loads of options to personalise the car with, including new E-Copper metallic and Donington Grey metallic exterior paint finishes. Carpo interior design is standard in Ivory White/Black while Accaro interior trim in Amido/E-Copper is optional. Standard specification includes satnav, BMW Display Key, Driving Assistant including Surround View and a mode 2 charging cable. Options include Head-Up Display, BMW Laserlight with BMW Selective Beam and acoustic pedestrian warning.

Expectations?

We don’t expect the electric motor changes to drastically alter the personality of the BMW i8, a car we are already smitten with. The coupe has always been a dramatic looking car, making every journey an occasion, and we expect the Roadster to do so in even more style. What’s more, you’ll be able to hear the distinctive roar of the engine a little clearer from inside now, too.
