Amarok gets a boost

Volkswagen has announced that the Amarok pickup is to get a new V6 diesel engine option. Until now, the Amarok has only been sold with a twin-turbocharged inline four-cylinder diesel engine with 180hp. Now, that will be boosted by the 3.0-litre V6 version to 224hp and a hefty 550Nm of torque, all of which is delivered from just 1,500rpm.

The transmission options will, again, be either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic and official fuel consumption with the auto is 7.6 litres per 100km (37mpg) with CO2 emissions of 199g/km.

There will also be 163hp and 204hp versions of the same engine, and 4Motion four-wheel drive will be standard, either switchable (for manual versions) or permanent with a Torsen limited slip differential (for the automatics).

New equipment includes Servotronic power steering, 16-inch or 17-inch brakes (depending on the engine output) and a post-collision braking system to ensure the car doesn't keep rolling forward after an accident.

There are a few minor styling tweaks on the outside (Volkswagen claims it makes the Amarok look more athletic), while inside there's a new, restyled dashboard and new seats. For the launch model you'll also be able to order a luxurious Amarok Aventura, which features 20-inch alloy wheels and the Park Distance Control parking assistant including a rear-view camera, bi-Xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED licence plate lighting and LED-illuminated side sills under the doors.

As before, the rear load compartment is 2.52 square metres and the maximum towing weight, depending on the version and options you choose, is 3.5 tonnes.

Irish sales will begin in October.
