Irelands compact size and mild climate make it an ideal location for electric driving, with numerous charging points spread across the country. However, the key to a stress-free EV road trip is planning your charging stops carefully. We’ve taken the stress out of that too with our favourite routes that showcase Irelands natural beauty while providing convenient EV charging along the way.

1. Dublin to Cork via Ireland’s Ancient East

This 360km journey from Dublin to Cork is a perfect blend of urban and coastal scenery. Start your trip in Dublin, ensuring your EV is fully charged before heading out. The first leg of your journey takes you to the picturesque town of Kilkenny, where you can stop to explore the medieval architecture and charge your car at one of the towns public charging points.

Next plan a stop in Waterford for a quick top-up at the city's charging stations while enjoying the Waterford Greenway, a beautiful 46km off-road cycling and walking trail. As you head further south, make sure to visit the colourful town of Kinsale in Co. Cork. Here, you can charge your EV at a local hotel or public charging point while savouring some of the best seafood Ireland has to offer.

Finally, arrive in Cork, where you can find numerous charging points in the city centre. Spend some time exploring the English Market or take a short drive to the nearby Blarney Castle. This route not only ensures ample charging opportunities but also offers a delightful mix of history, culture and sweeping coastal views.

2. Galway to Clifden via Connemara

Connemaras rugged landscapes and tranquil beauty make it an ideal destination for an electric road trip. This 120km road trip starts in Galway, where you can charge your car at one of the citys many public charging points. From there, head towards Connemara National Park, a place of breathtaking natural beauty.

Along the way, stop at the charming village of Oughterard to recharge yourself. Here you can take a fluffy alpaca for a walk at Curraghduff Farm, admire 16th-century Aughnanure Castle and discover the Glengowla Mines, Ireland's only lead and silver mine. Continue your journey through the picturesque landscapes of Connemara, stopping at Kylemore Abbey. Here, you can enjoy the stunning views and tour the sacred buildings and gorgeous gardens.

Arrive in Clifden, the heart of Connemara, where you’ll find several charging stations. Take the opportunity to explore the Sky Road, a circular route that offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Connemara countryside. This route is perfect for those seeking a combination of natural beauty and convenient charging options.

3. The Ring of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry is one of Irelands most famous scenic drives, and its becoming increasingly accessible for EV drivers. Begin this 220km journey in Killarney, where you can charge your car before setting off. The town has several charging stations, making it a convenient starting point.

As you drive along the Ring of Kerry, you’ll pass through charming villages such as Kenmare and Sneem, both of which offer charging facilities. Take your time to explore the painterly landscapes, from rugged coastlines to lush green hills. One notable stop is Derrynane House, ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell, where you can learn about one of the great figures in modern Irish history and enjoy the beautiful gardens.

Continue your journey to Cahersiveen, where you’ll find additional charging points. The town is a gateway to the Skellig Ring, a detour well worth taking for its dramatic coastal scenery and views of the Skellig Islands. Finish your trip back in Killarney, completing the loop with a fully charged vehicle and a heart full of unforgettable memories.

4. Dublin to Donegal via the Causeway Coastal Route

For those looking to explore Northern Ireland and the northwest of Ireland, this 420km route offers magnificent views and plenty of charging options. Start in Dublin and head north towards Belfast, where you can charge your car and explore the vibrant city.

From Belfast, follow the Causeway Coastal Route, stopping at key attractions such as the Giants Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. Usefully, there is an EV charging station at the Giants Causeway Park and Ride in Bushmills.

Continue your journey towards Derry, where you can recharge your vehicle while exploring the historic city walls. Finally, head west towards Donegal, a region known for its stunning beaches and rugged landscapes. Donegal town and the surrounding areas have several charging points, ensuring a smooth end to your electric road trip.
