What are the best new electric cars coming in the next year?

We look at the battery-powered vehicles coming soon to European roads.

With legislation and customer demand driving manufacturers to move the electric vehicle game forward, there’s a swathe of new, battery-powered metal heading to Europe in the coming year or so. Armed with greater range, more technology and better performance than ever before, the newest products are some of the most exciting electric vehicles yet. But which cars are coming to Europe in the next few months? In no particular order, we’ve run down some of the most exciting products hitting the road very soon.

Alpine A390

Alpine A390

Following on from the A290 that’s just been launched, the A390 is the third car in Alpine’s line-up, but it’s very different from the others. A three-motor, high-performance electric crossover, it’s designed to feel much more lightweight than its official kerb weight would suggest. How much it will cost remains to be seen, but it’s expected to rival the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and the electric Porsche Macan.

Jeep Wagoneer S

Jeep Wagoneer

Jeep isn’t necessarily known for sportiness, but the Wagoneer S is promising scintillating performance when it finally hits the road. All-electric and offering ample power, the SUV will be a powerful Tesla Model Y alternative, but it still gets some of the all-terrain image of a conventional Jeep product.

DS No.8

DS No.8

A cool new premium French model, the DS No.8 is a genre-bending coupe-crossover, propelled by powerful electric motors and fitted with some high-tech features. It’s a classy thing to look at, and it promises a uniquely French take on what it is to be a luxurious electric car. That said, it isn’t expected to break the bank, competing with the likes of the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron.

Smart #5

Smart #5

Smart’s transformation from city car maker to mainstream manufacturer is completed by the #5, a Skoda Enyaq-rivalling SUV that blends design influenced by Mercedes-Benz with Chinese-backed electric car know-how. A funky-looking, roomy and comfortable electric option, it’s expected to be a left-field yet slightly upmarket alternative to the VW ID.4 and Ford Explorer.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 N

Hyundai Ioniq 6 N

Following the success of the Ioniq 5 N hot hatch, we have high hopes for the intriguingly shaped Ioniq 6. Although the more conventional model hasn’t had the impact Hyundai may have hoped for, the curvy saloon will take some of the know-how gained from the spectacular Ioniq 5 N. Certainly, Hyundai will be hoping the BMW i4 rival will finally get the attention afforded to its sibling.

Nissan Leaf

Nissan Leaf

Recently revealed to the world, the new Nissan Leaf feels much more like an SUV than the car it replaces, but it still has a similar funkiness and modernity to its design. It may be taller, but it’s still a compact car designed for urban and suburban areas, and it’s expected to fulfil that duty perfectly. Expect to see plenty of these on European roads in the next 12 months or so.

Range Rover Electric

Range Rover Electric

The long-awaited electric Range Rover is coming soon, and though Land Rover hasn’t really revealed it yet, we’ve got a good idea of what to expect. A big battery is a certainty, providing adequate range despite the car’s bulky shape, while a luxurious and high-tech cabin is also pretty much guaranteed. It won’t be cheap, but we’re expecting customers to be queuing up to buy one.

Volvo ES90

Volvo ES90

The Volvo ES90 probably won’t surprise many people with its cool looks, its Scandinavian attitude or its capability – Volvo has been making great cars for years, now – but that won’t stop it being popular. A rival to the new Audi A6 Sportback e-tron and the BMW i5, the big saloon is expected to go down a treat with customers.

Renault 4

Renault 4

All of a sudden, Renault seems to have started making some properly cool cars. The Scenic and Renault 5 are cases in point, and the new, all-electric Renault 4 is yet another brick in that sub-zero wall. We’re looking forward to seeing this awesome electric vehicle on the road soon.

Mercedes-Benz CLA

Mercedes CLA

Available for the first time in all-electric form, the CLA promises great range and technology. It’ll look great, too, with a stylish and modern body in the tradition of its predecessors, and while the price is not yet confirmed, we’re expecting this to be a popular choice among image-conscious customers.
