Pros: Luxurious cabin, refinement, stylish Scandi design.
Cons: Expensive, rides firmer than expected, efficiency.
Volvo EX90 Design
The Volvo EX90 sits on a completely new platform to the long-standing XC90, shared with the Polestar 3 instead. But it retains unmistakable boxy Volvo styling and seven-seat practicality. It’s a bit longer and wider than the current XC90 PHEV, but sits a little lower overall. Highlights include new pixelated “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights, elegant flush door handles and a sleek silhouette for improved aerodynamics.
On the roof sits the LiDAR sensor, which could be mistaken for a taxi sign but instead houses laser-based technology to facilitate future advanced driver assistance features. However, this feature will be dropped for the 2026 model year.
Two trims are available, Plus and Ultra, with 21-inch alloy wheels as standard and 22-inch on the Ultra.
Volvo EX90 Interior
Inside the EX90 is modern, minimalist and beautifully finished with premium materials, including real wood and soft-touch synthetic leather in a variety of colours. A full digital driver display and portrait-style central touchscreen dominate the dash, with most of the car’s features controlled through the screen. Volvo keeps things simple with a few shortcut buttons, wireless Apple CarPlay and an in-built Google system with apps like Google Maps and Google Assistant.
Other standard features include a 360° camera, head-up display, heated seats, heated steering wheel, panoramic roof and a Bose sound system. The Ultra trim upgrades that to a stunning Bowers & Wilkins setup that can even replicate the acoustics of the famous Abbey Road Studios.
The second-row seats slide, recline and even include an integrated booster seat in the middle, along with separate climate controls and Isofix on the outer seats. Access to the third row is easy, but the extra seats are best suited to kids.
Boot space is good even with all three rows in use, and Volvo has created clever underfloor storage for charging cables and other gear. There’s a front storage compartment too, and the rear-most seats can be lowered electronically for added convenience.
Volvo EX90 Performance & Drive
Single motor and dual motor all wheel drive versions are available, including the top of the range Twin Motor Performance we tested. All wheel drive versions use a 107kWh battery, with the Performance version offering up to 602km (WLTP). Performance is excellent, with the 2025 Twin Motor Performance model producing 517hp and hits 0–100km/h in 4.9 seconds. Volvo has already released details of the 2026 model, which will be even more powerful, though even entry-level versions are brisk.
The drive is smooth, refined and extremely easy thanks to a brilliant one-pedal mode. Handling is secure with plenty of grip but it does lean a bit in corners due to its considerable weight of 2.7 tonnes, but the steering is nicely judged all the same. Ultra models come with standard air suspension, though it still feels firm over sharper bumps in town like manhole covers and out on poorly surfaced rural roads. Still, the cruising comfort and refinement is excellent, but heavy consumption during our winter test saw a more realistic 450km on a full battery charge.
Charging is strong too with 11kW AC and up to 250kW DC for 10–80% in about 30 minutes. 2026 models will introduce 800-volt charging, which will cut this to as little as 22 minutes.
Volvo EX90 Pricing
The electric seven-seater market is growing, with rivals like the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 starting around €80,000, while the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV sits at around €125,000.
The Volvo EX90 slots somewhere in the middle with single-motor, rear wheel drive versions starting from €99,895, and Twin Motor versions starting from €106,995. The Twin Motor Performance model tested is available from €124,895.
Carzone Verdict
The Volvo EX90 is a luxurious, refined and practical family SUV with superb tech, performance and classy Scandinavian design. It’s pricey and the ride is firmer than expected, but undeniably one of the most desirable electric seven-seaters on sale.
