Would an engine change devalue my car?

Hi there, I recently had to change the engine in my 12 VW Polo due to timing chain. Alternator belt has also recently been changed. I am just wondering would this devalue my car as I am thinking of trading it in. More concerned about the engine really, there is 100,000km on my car-there are 22,000km on the engine that was put in. ~Thanks in advance!

Our answer:

Hi Denise,

You can, legally, have the mileage of your car reset if a newer engine has been put in to replace an older unit, but you (a) need to make sure that this is done above board and (b) make sure you keep all the relevant paperwork and receipts. It will impact the value, but not by a huge amount if the replacement was done by a reputable garage and if you've kept all the paperwork.
