Would an Accord suit my teenage son?

Hi Need expert advice: Helping my teenage son who's working to help pay for a used car. Looking st 2009 Honda Accord gonna have a Honda dealer look it over for a fee for me. Buying from another place . It has 72 k has a car fax with showing lot of maintenance at a dealer oil changes etc. I want to know what things should I have dealer look for on this year and do you think it's a wise choice ? Is this a year to be wary of buying ? Thanks appreciate your help . Budget 7500

Our answer:

Hi Robin,

A couple of things to think about here and the first one is insurance. An Accord comes with either a 2.0-litre, 2.2-litre, or 2.4-litre engine so getting a teenager insured on that is going to be enormously costly. You would be much, much better advised to go for a Civic 1.4, if you’re keen on a Honda. Actually, being keen on a Honda is a very good idea, because they’re hugely reliable and long-lived. The 2009 Accord is really well-made, but if it’s the 2.2-litre diesel, do beware of the dual-mass flywheel that is occasionally troublesome, and very expensive to fix. Check for heavy vibration at idle and reluctant power delivery. But as I say, with a teenager to think of, I think your €7,500 could be better directed to a car with a much smaller engine.
