It's a close call between a good hybrid and a diesel. It depends on your driving style and how free-flowing the traffic is at the times of day you drive. On an empty road, it's likely that a good diesel would be more efficient on that route, as the M4 section is long and fast. However, if you're usually in busy traffic, it's possible that a hybrid would be as efficient. And of couse it depends on how you drive the car. If at all possible, get a loan of one of each to try the journey in for yourself.

With a round trip of well under 90 kilometres, any used or new electric car would also do the job for you, assuming you have somewhere to charge it up at home. They work out cheaper by far to fuel.
