Well, I know from your last question that you're looking at a Prius and that's as good a second hand bet as you can get. If you want something affordable  and reliable stick with Japanese and Korean brands so your best bets are Prius, Avensis, Corolla, Auris, Honda Civic, Kia cee'd, Hyundai i30 etc.
