Hi Shane, may I pick your brains please? We're looking to upgrade our 2nd car (economical for short journeys but also big enough boot for golf clubs). Any recommendations please? Currently have a 1L Skoda Fabia petrol, which is a lovely car to drive but not gone on the look of it and the boot is too small. We do approx 100km per week in the car. Our budget is 15K. Also any ideas on roughly how much we should get for a 172 skoda fabia please? Appreciate any guidance. Thank you. 22.08.2023
Hi Michelle,
With that weekly mileage, you certainly don't need/want a diesel. A petrol car would be fine, a hybrid would be better or, if you have an EV charger at home or are willing to get one installed, an electric car would be ideal. The €15,000 budget might limit choice in that regard, but let's see what we can find in the Carzone classifieds.
In terms of boot space, you didn't mention which generation of Fabia you have. The current one holds 380 litres, which is the same as Volkswagen Golf, while the previous Fabia holds 330 litres. To be safe, I'm going to suggest cars that have boots that hold more than 450 litres with the rear seats still in place.
Saying that, the current Nissan Leaf holds 420 litres and would make a fine second car. It would cost almost nothing to run if you had a home charger and you should find a few within budget. The first-generation Leaf has a much smaller boot though so forget about that.
The 2015-2016 Toyota Prius is another economical option with a boot of 445 litres, though I suspect that, if you don't like the look of the Fabia, you might not like that either.
An excellent option is the 2014-2017 Honda Civic. I think it's good-looking and it's a big step up from the Fabia in terms of space with a 477-litre boot and more interior room. They are within budget, though not massively plentiful - and don't go for the diesel model with your low mileage.
If you are happy with Skoda, a logical step up is the Skoda Octavia. It has a far larger boot, holding nearly 600 litres, and there are loads of them about.
