Buying a demo model from NI. Only ever registered to the dealership but car is two years old and has 15000km. Has a registration number. Will I have to pay VAT? Information on this is unclear as it says second hand cars must have been in private ownership for a reasonable period of time (which I think is said to be at least 6 months or 6000 km). I know no customs are due and as it's electric there will be no VRT but unclear on the VAT issue
Hi Bridin,
Actually, the rules have changed on importing cars from the North and our understanding is that, as the car you're looking at was registered there after 31 December 2020, it will attract VAT and customs duty (as well as VRT and the NOx levy) on importation into Ireland.
