Why the differences in TDI engines?

Why the differences in TDI engines?

I have a 2011 Skoda Octavia 2 Ltr TDI diesel 140 bhp auto 194,000 miles and have just bought a 2015 Octavia 2 ltr 150bhp TDI diesel automatic, 31,000 miles. The engine on the 2015 model sounds a lot noisier and rattlier when pulling away in 1st and second gear. Is this because of a change in engine design between the two, or could there be a problem? The performance of the 2015 model is excellent and a bit quicker than my 2011 model, which of course it should be. Please advise. Thanks.Kevin.

Our answer:

Hi Kevin,

There were certainly big changes in the diesel engines during those years, some of them as a result of the findings of 'dieselgate' that meant altering how the Volkswagen Group calibrated its diesel injection systems. That may be the difference between the two. If you're still not convinced, try to get a test drive in a few examples of cars similar to your newer one to get a feel for what is 'normal.'
