HI Shane. I have been looking at a 2008 vw passat highline 170 DSG. i believe it has the older BMR code engine although it has had only one owner and a full service history with 93500 miles. its taxed on old system of 710 euro. so 2 Q's for you. Should i stay looking for the newer engine version and why is it taxed for 710 euro. whats the tax under the new system. Thanks
Hi David,
There are some weak points on the old BMR engine, which are the injectors (check for rough running or poor pickup from low rpm) and the air mass sensor (sluggish performance or limp-home mode), but other than that they're solid.
As for the tax, it must have been bought in the first six months of 2008, before the new CO2-based tax system came in. There was the option for owners to convert to the new tax system, which with 160g/km would save you €150 a year, so check with your tax office to see if you can switch.
