Why is the tax on a 2009 renault laguna 1.6 petrol so high? I've just checked the number of a car I was hoping to buy but the yearly tax is 750! I have an 18 year old laguna 1.6 petrol and its nearly 200 less to tax! Surely this can't be right?!
Hi Colette,
It’s simple, really — it’s down to the CO2-based tax system. Because the Laguna would have been registered after July 2008, it would be subject to the CO2-based tax system and a small petrol engine in a big car equals high CO2 — 173g/km to be exact, for that model, which means Band E tax and, yes, €750 a year. Your 2000-regsitered car is on the old by-engine-capacity system and so does indeed cost €544 a year to tax. If you want low tax on a post-2008 model car, you either need to buy a diesel or search out a model with a more modern compact petrol turbo engine, which will usually have lower CO2 figures.
