The engine oil light is for oil pressure. If it stays on after the engine starts then it indicates that the oil pressure in the engine is low. That is a very serious thing so do not drive any further without investigating. The first thing to check is that there is sufficient oil in the engine. If there is, then something else is causing the problem and you need to get the car to a qualified mechanic as soon as possible to investigate. Sometimes the oil pressure switch or wiring to it fails as well, but you can't assume that is the problem, I'm afraid.
