Why is a UK Santa Fe more to tax?

Why are the emissions on the Hyundai Santa Fe CRDi premium 2013 7 seater model 159 on a UK import and 149 in the rep. of Ireland. We have just completed an import and have to pay Motor tax of €550 instead of the €390 we had assumed?

Our answer:

Hi Ciara,

I think the problem here is one of model years. Hyundai updated the Santa Fe in late 2014 and that brought with it a drop in CO2 to 149g/km for the most basic model. You have to remember that that most basic model comes without seven seats and has the smallest possible wheel option, both of which have a significant effect on emissions.

In fact, you may be quite lucky. According to the UK government’s database, a 2013 model year Hyundai Santa Fe should have CO2 emissions of 179g/km, so I’d take the 159g/km rating with both hands…
