OK, first of all, it’s going to be tricky ascertaining a trade-in price for your Focus – its market value is anything between €5,000 and €12,500, depending on its spec, engine, mileage and condition, so you’re going to get anything between about €3,500 and €10,750 for a trade-in.

On your budget, that doesn’t leave you much leeway for your specification, but we have found one decent option – the Hyundai i20 automatic. It comes with a 1.4-litre petrol engine, it should still have at least two years of manufacturer’s warranty left and it’ll suit your needs perfectly. You should be able to squeeze one in for €15,000.
