Which SUV for up to €50,000?

Hi , I have total budget of 50000 including a diesel tucson 221 reg with 57000 on the clock to trade in mostly short journeys to town 10 to 20 km , looking to stay in suv type vehicle ,open to phev but looking to change again in 3 yre approx so depreciation is important, I would welcome your suggestions as I've had 2 tucons I'd like to.move away from hyundai nothing wrong with the car just fancy a change. Petrol or diesel ? I don't think I'm completely ready to go electric given very poor trade in values .Suggestions welcome . Thanks Rod

Our answer:

Hi Roddy,

With such short journeys, you really are the ideal candidate for a full EV and despite recent issues with depreciation and negative media, I expect trade-in values to be well settled by the time you next come to change your car. If you're open to the idea, come back to us on that and I'll try to help you find one that suits.

If you're not happy to go fully electric yet, you should certainly consider a PHEV with your low mileage. Though only do this if you can also get a home charger installed easily, as PHEVs only make sense if you charge them up as often as possible and use them in their electric mode.

I'd highly recommend you don't go for a diesel with such low mileage. Petrol power would be better than diesel, as would a non-plug-in hybrid.

With all that in mind and assuming you are looking to buy new, here are a few good options:

- Toyota RAV4 hybrid (not plug-in as that's out of your budget)

- Renault Austral hybrid

- Kia Sportage (both hybrid and plug-in hybrid within budget)
