You want the 2.0-litre 150hp TDI engine and a DSG gearbox, if you can find it, for that sort of mileage – it’ll just take the sting out of repeated long journeys in heavy traffic. The Superb Combi is a vast machine and we love it, but if your budget’s tighter then an Octavia Combi is an excellent second prize, because it’s a great car. The Style model gets 17-inch alloys, the larger and more attractive 9.2-inch Columbus satnav screen/infotainment and dual-zone climate control, which are all desirable extras, but there’s enough kit on the Ambition (16-inch wheels, eight-inch touchscreen, air conditioning) to make it more than palatable as a specification.
