Which family car to go for?

I have a newborn, a 4 and 6 year old. Looking to get rid of my Tucson and get something bigger that I can fit three car seats into the back. The Ford S-MAX seems to be able to accommodate this and I like the optional extra seats and boot space. Are there any other similar/better car models you would recommend in this 7 seater type range? It would need to have the ability to fit the three car seats in one row - I think the Kodiaq only has 2 seats and a “half seat” in the back row so wouldn’t fit.

Our answer:

Hi Declan,

I was in the exact same situation five years ago. We ended up going for a Volkswagen Touran and it was a brilliant option. There are actually three individual seats in the middle row and the car is wide, so there's loads of space for three car seats in one row (and then a huge boot out back). I don't believe the Kodiaq (and SEAT Tarraco and Tiguan Allspace) are a lot smaller, but you're right that cars such as the S-Max are just perfect for your needs. The Ford Galaxy is another option.

Bear in mind that very few cars, even MPVs, have three ISOFIX mounting points across the middle row if you're specifically looking for those. These cars do:

Audi Q7

Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer (previously called the Picasso)

Opel Zafira Tourer

Peugeot 5008 (not the current SUV model, the previous generation people carrier)

Renault Grand Scenic

SEAT Alhambra
