Which EV or PHEV to replace my Octavia with?

I'm looking for a replacement for my diesel Skoda Octavia. I'm interested in going electric or plug-in hybrid but would need something reasonably spacious, reliable, and ideally less than 5 years old. Budget is 30k. Any recommendations?

Our answer:

Hi Sinead,

You have a lot of choice at that budget, so then it comes down to preferences and space requirements. For example, you could afford a new or nearly-new electric car such as the MG4. That's quite spacious in the cabin, but doesn't have a boot anywhere near as large as your Octavia's. Same story with the Ora Funky Cat. There are other smaller EVs within budget that I'm going to rule out given what you've told us, but it is worth checking out the MG for size. Likewise a nearly-new Nissan Leaf, though I suspect that may be too small for your needs.

One of the newest used plug-in hybrids listed on Carzone right now for sale is the Renault Megane estate, a 2021 example using the company's plug-in hybrid technology. There's also a plug-in hybrid version of the excellent Kia Ceed SW estate. Both of those are likely to be large enough for your needs, though as you've not specifically mentioned wanting an estate, then it may not be what you're looking for. Likewise, there are many crossover/SUV-style vehicles using plug-in hybrid power.

Other plug-in hybrid cars to consider within budget include the SEAT Leon e-Hybrid and, if you want to stick with Skoda, we even found a plug-in hybrid 2021 Superb for sale within budget. That's a massive car inside and possibly the best option of all those listed here.
