Planing to purchase ford smax 2010 to 2012 ish. Should I do 1.6 engine or 2 litre. I have had 1.8 and some problems with cutting out difficult to find cause etc. Is the 2 litre a better engine. Who cares about the tax if it's engine better !
Hi Dolores,
Yes, generally speaking the 2.0-litre TDCi engine is a better bet, in reliability terms, than the old 1.8. The 1.8 was basically a modern, direct-injection head plonked on to an old engine design, which had its roots in the 1980s, so it developed more than a few reliability issues. You need to check that the dual-mass flywheel is OK (excessive vibration at tickover, felt through the clutch pedal, is the giveaway) and that the diesel particulate filter is in good health (be suspicious of low-mileage cars in that respect). The diesel injectors can also give issues, but thankfully they’re not usually too expensive to sort.
