Which cars to go for?

We have 2 cars in our household. A 151 Toyota Rav 4 (Love but not doing enough mileage for diesel - UK import- mid spec) and a 08 VW Passat (also diesel UK import but basic model). Both cars used on short 10 mile journeys max each day. We have a budget of 10K to play around with. Any advice on which to upgrade and what's best for 2 Adults and 2 growing kids (5 and 7 year old) please? We would be happy with 1 small hatchback and 1 SUV. Do you think north before 31/10?

Our answer:

Hi Michelle,

Although it would release more money and thus budget for a replacement car, we’d advocate sticking with the RAV4, as it fulfils the SUV side of your brief and it’s a decent enough machine. Admittedly, your mileage isn’t enough for a diesel, but try and take it on some long runs from time to time on the motorway, and it should be fine. Therefore, sell the Passat – if it's low mileage, and we’re guessing it is from your description, we reckon you’ll get around €5,000 for it. That should give you €15,000 in total, which will be plenty enough to secure a nice TSI-powered Skoda Octavia, one of the best family hatchbacks there is on the second-hand market.
