Which car for my long commute?

Hi I'm starting a new job which has a 220 motorway mile daily commute (no public transport). I have an 08 e220 cdi with 250,000 miles on the clock now (perfect mech order) returning about 50 mpg. Fuel and toll savings would point me to an ev but none have the range I need for real world driving (headwinds and winter) Hybrids seem next best but elec range is minimal and then im driving a small petrol on a motorway - the ride seems to be for urban usage really? That brings me back to the big diesels - newer diesels seem to be more fuel efficient by 20% or so but the cost of purchase / depreciation doesn't seem to make the investment worthwhile to save on fuel. Am I missing something? I need to keep my total costs under control so I wont be buying a Tesla for 85k to save 8.5 k per year on diesel.. anyone any insights / suggestions? Am I missing something?

Our answer:

Hi Liam.

Sounds to us that a diesel is indeed the best option for you for now, until you can afford an electric car that will easily do the journey daily without extra top-ups. You've not said what budget you have, if any, to upgrade, so I'd suggest that your current Mercedes might be ideal for the job until you can afford to make a worthwhile investment in your next car, which should then come with substantial cost savings.
