I have 04D Toyota avensis which has a lot of scratches on bodywork and 88000 miles.I live in the city and only do about 5000 miles per year.I would like to get a new car but wondering if I should buy a 2nd hand car with low mileage. My budget is €20000 but would probably do an extra €2000 to €30000 if I found something I really liked.I’m not interested in an electric car. What advice would you give.
Hi Mary,
The world is your oyster with that much money to spend, though it does depend on how big a car you need. New cars priced around the €20,000 mark are usually superminis such as the Toyota Yaris, Renault Clio and Ford Fiesta. If you go second hand with low mileage then you'll have lots more options.
With your low mileage, and accepting that you do not want an electric car, it might be sensible to look for a regular hybrid, one you can't plug in. There are many options to consider, including the Hyundai Ioniq or Niro and, if you want to stick with Toyota, the Yaris or Auris. You might even find an early Corolla hybrid if you're patient.
Whatever you do, do not buy a diesel for that low mileage, as it is likely to come with higher maintenance bills in the long run.
