Forgive me for putting words in your mouth, but I reckon at that budget you need something simple and reliable, so I’d go for either a Honda Civic 1.4 VTEC or a Toyota Corolla 1.4 VVTi — you’ll find 2002 to 2003 models within your budget and both are roomy, reliable and nice to drive. Plenty of both available so shop around for a good one.
