What's wrong with my RAV4?

Hi there,

I've had my RAV4 for three years; it's a 2002 model and it's been an amazing car, until whilst driving suddenly the battery and management light came on. The alternator belt had snapped. I spoke to one guy who said something else must have caused it to happen. I took it to my local mechanic who changed the oil for me and put another belt on. A week after I started noticing problems with my steering, like driving on ice, constantly feeling like the tyres are not gripping the road. The management light came on again. I took it again to my local mechanic and he reset the light and told me to come back if it comes back on.

I can't afford to take it to a main dealer but I'm sure there is something far more serious going on. All fluids checked and tyres. I'm petrified to drive it as it constantly feels like the back end could slide out. It's a really weird feeling. Could you help me please?

Thanks so much

Kind regards

Bernice Randall

Our answer:

Hi Bernice,

I'm afraid this is almost impossible to analyse from afar and a good mechanic is your only option. My initial thoughts were that your alternator is ceasing, causing the drive belt to snap and potentially also affecting the power steering drive, but that's not entirely consistent with your description. Please do take the car to a garage you trust to have the car looked at.
