It's almost impossible to diagnose such a problem from afar. The engine check light comes on when pretty much anything is deemed to be wrong with the engine, so it could be anything from the fuel system to a sensor failure or something in the ignition system. Assuming it's a petrol model, the first thing to check would be the spark plugs, then the leads and coils. Failing that, best bet is to plug the car into a diagnostic computer to get a proper error code.

You need to get the car to a good mechanic, basically. Hopefully it isn't too expensive to fix.
