We have not heard of any widespread issues with this car, but then again it's quite rare. It really sounds like the control unit for the transmission needs resetting or possibly even reprogramming. I'd highly recommend you take the car to a Volkswagen dealer or a very well respected specialist in that car to plug it into a diagnostic computer and sort it out. Hopefully it won't be too expensive to fix.
