You've not told us the year or any other details, but we do know that the 2.2-litre diesel Freelander of circa 2010-2015 developed a couple of faults that may be relevant. The first is in incorrect fuel gauge reading. Perhaps yours is showing fuel in the tank when it's actually nearly empty? The fix is to reprogram the instrumentation. The other potential problem is with the engine control unit (ECU). Best bet is to bring the car to a good mechanic to have it plugged into a diagnostic computer for analysing.
