What's up with this BMW's service mileage?

Hi, I intend to by a 2011 520d and the ODO days 61K miles. The service history shows 1st service : 14000, 2nd : 50000, 3rd : 60000, 4th: 80000. When i asked the dealer how can this be and he says probably the first service is marked in miles and rest of them in kms. Pls suggest if there is something looks fishy here, though the dealer is the main BMW dealer.

Our answer:

Hi Sanjay,

This can be easily solved – is the car an import that was originally sold in the UK? If so, the dealer is most likely telling the truth. It would have started its life in the UK (where cars’ odometers measure in miles, therefore so do the service schedules with main dealers) and then, having come here, the dealerships switch to our preferred measurement of kilometres… even though the physical odometer itself doesn’t change from reading miles. If that car is showing 61,000 miles on a mileage odometer from the UK, then it has done 98,170km and that would tally with its service history so far. It will be due another service in around another 1,600km, or 1,000 miles.
