Sounds to us like the car's computer is going into 'limp home' mode, which means that something has failed that affects the emissions. It could just be a faullty temperature sensor, but really it could be anything. The quickest way to diagnose the issue is to bring the car to a good mechanic to plug it into a diagnostic computer to obtain a fault code and work from there.
