At the moment, there is no compensation on offer for European customers. Volkswagen has offered some significant compensation to its US customers, including cash payments and some vehicle buy-backs, but as yet no such programme is available on this side of the Atlantic. There might yet be though. The EU, consumer groups and national governments are all putting Volkswagen under huge pressure on the issue. 

As for the state of play in fixing the cars, it's ongoing. Volkswagen has agreed pretty much all of the details of all the work that needs to be done. The cars are currently being recalled and although there have been plenty of rumours of the schedule slipping, Volkswagen still says all the cars will be sorted by the end of this year.
