A lot of people have a soft spot for the Land Rover Discovery 3, but go into the prospect of buying one with your eyes open – they can be problematic. The 2.7-litre diesel is sluggish and the hyper-rare 4.4-litre V8 is thirsty to run (although the engine itself is as close to bulletproof as production car motors can get), so the 3.0-litre V6 diesel is the model to seek out. Watch out for Land Rover’s particular bugbear of electrical problems, which might manifest as an issue with the self-levelling rear suspension – an expensive job to fix if it goes wrong.
