Depends on your budget of course, but I always reckon the Honda CR-V, from 2007 on, is a really good choice. If you need something smaller than that then track down a Skoda Yeti with the 2.0 TDI engine and 4Motion four-wheel drive. Now that I think of it, the Volkswagen Tiguan in the same spec is a cracking car and the second generation Nissan X-Trail is always well worth a look.
