Almost any of the current or recent crop of 1.6 diesels will be a major improvement in economy, emissions and refinement terms from your Focus. The ones I’d recommend most highly are the Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI (predictable but then there’s a good reason for that), the Honda Civic 1.6 iDTEC (roomy and with a fantastic diesel engine - reliable too) and the Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI (like the Golf but roomier and more affordable).
