What to do with my Vectra?

Hi Carzone, I have an 08 Vectra - due its NCT and tax this month. Put it in for a service today and found out that it needs 4 new tyres and a few other expensive bits to be done. Have worked out that with the service, additional work to be done, tyres, NCT and 3 months tax, it will cost me over €1,000 in the month of Sept and i don't think the car is worth that. What are my best options here? This car is our 2nd car in the household. I use it for driving short distance (15 mins) to/from work daily and then driving to/from Dublin - Dundalk every other weekend so not mad long journeys. No kids or anything so don't necessarily need a big car (this car was inherited). What would be your advice in this situation? I had been considering upgrading anyway given the age of the car but was looking at maybe a 2014/2015 and using Vectra as a trade-in. Will dealers take it if it doesn't have NCT, new tyres etc? Am i better buying a new car and getting a good scrappage deal or am i too late in season for that? any advice would be appreciated.

Our answer:

Hi Tabitha,

Yes, you are in a bit of a quandary here – you’re right about the car, it’s probably only worth about €2,000 tops, so spending 50 per cent of its value on it doesn’t seem wise. You could avail of a scrappage deal to get the best from it, as it would be Euro 4 or older in terms of its emissions, but you’d have to wait until the 201 plates come out at the start of next year to do that – and we’re guessing three months of waiting isn’t going to work. You might get part-ex offers on the Vectra if you want to trade in, but accept they’re going to be nominal; say, €250-€400 or so.
