I have a car sitting in the drive for almost a year and the tax has lapsed. I understand from one of your responses to a similar query made that we are not liable to pay the tax as car is off the road. What do I need to show to a prospective buyer so that he doesn't think he needs to pay it all if he buys the car. Thank you
Hi Sonal,
I should clarify a few things here.
First up, if you want to avoid pay motor tax on a car that is off the road, then the paperwork must be submitted beforehand - it cannot be submitted afterwards. Until that paperwork is done, you are liable for the tax, even if the car has actually been off the road.
However, you probably don't need to worry about that now, as all motor tax arrears are cancelled on the sale of a car. Neither you, as the seller, nor the buyer, will be liable for any back tax after the car officially changes hands.
Ask us anything motoring related and please provide as much information as possible so we can give you the most accurate advice.
