What if my belt was never changed?

What if my belt was never changed?

I purchased a car in 2016 second hand. As part of the sale the dealer agreed to change the timing belt. The dealer recorded the change on the Service Log. During the last service the mechanic expressed concern that the belt had not been changed at all.

Our answer:

Hi Alan,

If it has been three years since the belt was supposedly done and the sale was agreed, I don't think you'll be able to do much about this. I'd be interested to know how your mechanic worked out that it was never done, but it may be worth checking for a proper record of the change from the original seller if you can and perhaps getting a second opinion on whether it has been done as yet. Clearly no damage has been done to the engine as yet, but if the belt really has not been changed as yet, and it should have been, then I'd urge you get it sorted out without delay.
