SUV stands for Sport Utility Vehicle, a phrase coined in the States to cover cars we used to call 4x4s. Many refer to them here as 'jeeps' though Jeep is of course a brand in its own right. Not all of them have four-wheel drive now and there's an increasingly blurred line between what an SUV is and a crossover.
